This was on the descent into Long Canyon and was one of the highlights of the day :))
There's a steep climb up at the beginning of the trail and a few spots where the trail is just barely wide enough for MyLoyl to get by. There were also a few fallen rocks, one right in the middle of the road, but fortunately it was at a spot where the road was just wide enough to squeak by it. |
This shot was take shortly after to topped the climb and as the road leveled out and headed towards Gemeni Bridges. You know me and rocks - just couldn't resist this shot. |
Gooney Bird Rock is one of the landmarks along the way to Gemini Bridges. Blow this one up to get the full effect... |
This shot taken near Gemini Bridges and shows you the road ahead and a side trail - |
This is Gemini Bridges - Gemini implies two arches, but from our viewpoint we could only see one of them. There was a path down to the bridges, but it was a little too steep for the honey. We were happy with the view we got and the ride out. |
From the bridges we headed out to Ut313 and down to the Long Canyon trail. This turned out to be the highlight of the trip. This shot is on the trail leading over to Long Canyon and gives you an idea of the scenic views we had along the way.
Here's another one from around the curve in the road in the shot above showing another part of the valley out in front of us. |
I call this one The Chief - but actually it might be called the Pow Wow - there's actually 3 of them there looking out over the valley (see the next shot).
If you don't see it try blowing it up and use a little imagination :)) |
and here's what they're looking at. That little ribbon through the canyon is the trail and we'll be starting down towards it in just a minute. |
I'm not sure that a picture really captures this descent - this is probably a 30% to 40% grade. I'm not sure how to measure it, but it was a low gear (like 1st gear) road down. |
With some tight switchbacks ..... |
and then more down hill .... |
I called the fallen rock on the trail the Underpass. It looks pretty ominous as you approach - but as you can see from the picture at the top of the page there was plenty of room for us to get through. |
After leaving the underpass we spotted a car down below coming up the hill so found a wide spot to pull over and wait for him to go by. The road down is narrow and there are not a lot of spots to pass oncoming traffic.... |
The road down is narrow and strewn with rocks. Fortunately we didn't encounter anything in the roadway we couldn't navigate by and nothing decided to come down as we went by...... |
This one is called Roshach Test - so blow it up, turn your imagination on and see what you see -
Two faces (indian or myan)
A lone statue (myan)
Two beggars
A child talking to a fat woman.
A viking ship
A small person hiding in the shadows
A man with one eye put out or covered.
That's the major ones - then there are several little things to see.
Don't be surprise if you don't see the things listed above. Everyone see's their own images - just worry if you don't see anything but a pile of rocks. |
This one is easy - did you see ET? |
As we left Long Canyon a sign pointed to Jug Handle Arch, so we stopped to admire natures handiwork for a minute. |
And our last shot of the day - another sign on the road home pointed us to some indian writing on the cliff edge. You need to blow this one up to really see the writing clearly.
These are obviously messages of some sort but I don't think anyone has ever figured out what they mean - would be something to google and see if they've ever decoded these symbols. |
