05/31/10 - Hurrah Pass & Chicken Corners,
Moab, Ut
Well today we're back to a lizard,
but this one is a little more colorful and was a bit bigger.
| The road up to the pass was pretty easy. This S
turn was one of the highlights before we got to a few more interesting
spots closer to the top. |
|
| The landscape was rugged, but real interesting. |
|
|
The view from the pass was really great. See that
panorama on the May page for today to really get a good view of the
whole valley, and blow this one up - it's pretty spectacular. |
|
| The book said that those afraid of heights should stop an
Hurrah Pass and not attempt to go down the west side. Getting depth is
something I'm having an issue with in my photos right now so you'll
have to take my word for it - that was a lot further down than you'd
want your jeep or truck doing in one step. |
|
| This one gives you a little better idea of how far it was
down from the narrow ledge down the west side of the pass. |
|
| And in some spots that edge was litterally only inches away.
We did see one guy get out of the jeep he was driving and walk down the
hill leaving his wife to drive the jeep down. I'm not fond of heights
myself, but I've found that if you concentrate on the road and only
look down over the edge when you're stopped it's not a problem. |
|
| This is about as rough as the road got anywhere along the way
on this trip. There was also a few sandy spots, but again nothing that
Mloyl couldn't handle. |
|
| We got to the turn off for Catacomb Rock just about lunch
time so we headed over there to find a spot for our picnic. The blanket
there on the rock was the spot - it was getting a little warm out and
we wanted some shade and there was no place level for the chairs so we
settled for a comfy looking rock. Here's a shot inside Catacomb Rock - |

here's another panorama shot of our view at lunch and that's
not all of it, just all I can fit into a picture that'll still fit the
page :)) After lunch we decided to head back. Chicken Corners will wait for another day as it was still an hour or so away and we like to get back by 4 or so. |
| I'd like to leave May with this blooming cactus that I think
sums up our month in Moab well. We had a few thorny moments (the dust
storm being at the top of that list) but overall it was a beautiful
month with lots of great wheeling, a couple great rides and a lot of
memories. From here it's on to Glendale, Ut and some adventures (mostly rides I think) in the Zion, North Rim, Grand Staircase area :)) |
